Bettinson: Ravensbrück Series

Mathias Fine Art is honored and delighted to collaborate with HHRC at the time of the center’s 40 anniversary by providing a loan exhibition:  Bettinson: Ravensbrück Series.   Bettinson’s last series of 17 paintings will be on public view in Maine for the first time after being shown at Pace University in New York in 2024.

opening reception & gallery talk: June 12,  5:00 – 6:30 pm Ms Mathias, administrator of the Bettinson Art and Literary Trust, presents information about the genesis of this series and its significance to the Bettinson oeuvre.  Bettinson’s death mask, cast in bronze, will be unveiled at this time.

RELIEF – an exploration

FOLDING BIRDS FOR PEACE

WORKSHOP: Sept 25th 2024, 3-5pm

You are invited to participate in a special event conducted by Mona Shiber whose work is currently on display at Mathias Fine Art. Shiber has been deeply affected by the events in the Middle East and has teamed up with JunPong Lin to make a creative statement for peace in the face of the devastating destruction which is taken place. The PeaceBird Project seeks to create a representation for every life lost in the current conflict or as the artist says “every life flown too soon.”

The work shop will teach you to fold doves and cranes using special papers. Please send us an e-mail to reserve your space for the workshop, space is limited. $25/person, 2/$40. The fee includes materials. We look forward to seeing you there.

A gallery talk is scheduled for 7/17 at 3:30-4:15pm and a reception will take place on 8/22 at 4:30-6:30pm. Please join us.

RELIEF – an exploration

Mathias Fine Art is pleased to present RELIEF – an exploration. Works by ten artists from New England and New York have been brought together to form an exciting display of different approaches to employing relief elements in sculpture, painting, ceramics and mixed media works on paper.

Shown on the right: Antoinette Prien SchultzeDressed Torso”  20.5 x 10 x 10”, granite, glass, steel.  The artist comments thus on her work: “My Dressed Torso is a sensually feminine expression of a female dressed in her finery. The clothes one wears can change ones outlook.”

Book-talk and signing by Michael Culver

August 10, 3:00 – 4:00pm

SPARRING IN THE DARK; THE ART AND LIFE OF MAINE PAINTER HENRY STRATER

Michael Culver will present a book talk about his new artist biography with the title SPARRING IN THE DARK; THE ART AND LIFE OF MAINE PAINTER HENRY STRATER.  Culver is an engaging speaker, who knew Strater well; he has a doctorate in art history and humanities from the University of Louisville and is a Fulbright-Hays grantee.  His writings on art and literature have been published in the U.S. and in England.

Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Gallery Talk

The current exhibition Culver at al is a celebration of Michael Culver’s dynamic paintings and his latest achievement: the publication of the fascinating new book Sparring in the Dark – The Art and Life of Maine Painter Henry Strater.  The talk by Cordula Mathias is in form of a walk-through where Culver’s work is compared to the other ten artists and where we consider different media and approaches. Questions and comments are welcome.  The event is free and open to the public.

CULVER et al: Group Exhibition 2023

JULY through OCT 15, 2023

Mathias Fine Art is presenting a changing display of paintings, works on paper & mixed media & sculptures by Clinton Adams, Chris Alexander, Martha Holland Bartsch, Max Bartsch, Brenda Bettinson, Michael Culver, Michael Eisemann, Paul Feyling, Patt Franklin, John Lorence, Lesia Sochor.

Michael Culver is the featured artist of the show.  Michael Culver has garnered praise for his use of color and the dynamic application of paint.  He works on different surfaces in small and large formats. He is also an exhibiting photographer who has received recognition for that part of his oeuvre.  Two of his photographs are included in Iconic New Hampshire now on view at Plymouth State University, NH until Sept 30.   A number of his photographs are also available at Mathias Fine Art.  Culver’s paintings are interspersed here with works, which range from mid 20th century to the 2020s.

The photo shows Culver‘s dynamic painting Wet Fall in center, surrounded by two Eisemann serigraphs and a 3-D painting by Bettinson & a bronze by Holland Bartsch.

SPECIAL EVENT

Musical Presentation of the Bandura, the national instrument of the Ukraine by Andrea Goodman

August 20   4-5 pm

Andrea Goodman will give a presentation featuring the bandura, the national instrument of Ukraine.  You are invited to join us at Mathias Fine Art for this special occasion.  Be prepared to hear Goodman’s unique voice accompanied by the strings of the bandura in a rendition of folk tunes as well as original music by this unique musical talent.  You will also learn about the instrument and how our presenter first came into contact with it, fell in love with it, learned to play it and has incorporated it into her musical practice.

The event is free, but we will pass the hat for Ukraine. Raffle ticket for an original watercolor will be available as part of our fundraising for humanitarian aid for Ukrainian refugees.

Gallery Talk

gallery talk by Cordula Mathias:  Aug 12  3:30 – 4:00 pm

Gallerist Cordula Mathias will present a short gallery talk about the current exhibition BLUE & YELLOW: persist

The talk will cover the reason for the show, the background of included artists and their approach to the theme, and will touch on some of the hallmarks of the represented artists. Shown on the left is Forget-Me-Nots by Kate Marohn a work created earlier this year. The medium is acrylic, ink & oil stick on paper. The work is 16 × 20” and surrounded by a wooden frame.    

Questions and comments are welcome.  The event is free and open to the public. The space is air-conditioned. Join us.
